The short answer

Does Claude add a watermark to text?

Yes. Anthropic signed the EU AI Act code of practice on transparency, and Claude models released from August 2026 mark their output at the model level. The mark is woven into the text itself rather than attached to a file, so it reads normally, changes nothing about the wording, and travels with a copy and paste. It is present whether the words came from the app, the API, Claude Code or a cloud partner.

Where it lives

Inside the words, not the file

The mark is woven into the generated text. Saving as plain text or retyping the formatting keeps it intact.

What you see

Nothing at all

It is imperceptible by design and does not affect meaning or readability. You cannot spot it by eye or by zooming in.

Where it applies

Every Claude surface

Applied at the model level, so the app, the API, Claude Code and cloud partners all produce marked output.

What breaks it

A real rewrite

Anthropic states that heavily edited or paraphrased text may no longer carry a detectable mark. Small edits do not qualify.

What does not

Copying and pasting

The mark survives moving between apps, reformatting, and changing a handful of words.

Who can read it

Detection is coming

Anthropic is building tools so third parties can check for the mark. Assume graders and publishers will have them.

Two layers, two fixes

Remove the Claude watermark

A Claude AI watermark remover has to do two unrelated jobs. Invisible Unicode characters are stripped mechanically, which changes nothing you can see. The signal in the word choices is different: it only breaks when the sentences are genuinely rewritten, which is why swapping a few words never works. Anthropic says as much — heavily edited or paraphrased text may no longer carry a detectable mark.

  1. 01

    Paste the draft

Text or a file. Nothing is stored, and there is no length limit.

  2. 02

    Strip the hidden characters

The mechanical layer comes out first. Not a single visible word changes.

  3. 03

    Rewrite the sentences

Each sentence is rebuilt so the pattern in the wording no longer holds, then scored.

Before

Companies have embraced flexible arrangements, recognizing the crucial role autonomy plays.

3 hidden characters removed, 2 sentences rewritten

After

Most companies offer some version of it now. People simply work better when nobody is counting their hours.

Files: the other mark

The text watermark is in the wording, so the rewrite above handles it. A file’s C2PA content credential is in its metadata, so it needs stripping instead — along with EXIF and XMP.

Is there a Claude watermark detector?

Not a public one yet. Anthropic Claude watermark detection is being built for third parties, but until it ships you cannot verify the statistical layer yourself. Claude AI watermark detection by eye is impossible by design — the mark is imperceptible and does not affect readability.

What you can check is the mechanical layer. Paste the text into a plain text or code editor, switch on invisible characters, and narrow no-break spaces show up as visible marks. Our own detector is next on the roadmap, alongside the plagiarism checker.

The statistical mark

A pattern in the token choices, embedded at generation time. No public tool can read it yet.

Invisible characters

Narrow no-break spaces and zero-width joiners that ship inside copied output. These you can find yourself.

AI writing patterns

Sentence-length variance, recycled connectives, hedging density. What ordinary detectors score you on.

By model

Which Claude models carry a watermark?

Does Claude 3.5 have a watermark? Not natively. It predates the transparency commitment. Here is where each generation stands.

Claude Opus 4.5
Marked
Watermarking supported at launch under the transparency code.
Claude Sonnet 4.5
Marked
Same behaviour across the app, API and Claude Code.
Claude Haiku 4.5
Marked
Short outputs carry a weaker, less readable signal.
Claude 3.7 Sonnet
In transition
Older models are being brought in during the transition period.
Claude 3.5 Sonnet
Not native
Predates the commitment. Still flagged by ordinary AI detectors.

Questions people ask

Yes, on current models. Anthropic signed the EU AI Act code of practice on transparency, and models released from August 2026 support marking at launch. The watermark is embedded in the generated text itself, imperceptibly, so it does not change meaning or readability. Older models are being brought in during the transition period.
